Why is NEET Important for MBBS?

It is a well-known fact that every year millions of students aspiring to become doctors take part in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test or NEET. It goes without saying that NEET serves as the first step towards achieving this goal for most candidates. It is impossible to enter the program of MBBS in any government or private medical college in the country without taking NEET. This statement provides the answer to why the test is considered important.

The fact is that before the introduction of NEET, it was necessary to give a number of tests on the state level as well as college level, which created a lot of confusion, spending of money and even unfairness of the process since the candidate could have more chances to obtain a seat in one state than in another having similar grades. NEET has managed to change everything and now only one examination determines the position in the ranks.

The foremost reason why NEET is so important is because of its role as the gatekeeper to quality medical education. MBBS is not any other course. Doctors work with human lives and thus their training has to adhere to a certain standard. NEET acts as a tool that filters out the candidates with the required academic base for the challenging five and a half years of education. It has been designed in such a way that the syllabus includes Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, taught up to Class 11 and 12, which is the basic requirement of medical education.

Medical colleges run by the government provide subsidized education and good exposure in clinics. Securing admissions in these colleges is highly competitive and requires nothing but NEET rank. For private colleges as well, the same score of the exam is needed for taking admission either under the management quota or in counseling procedure. It implies that scoring high in NEET can save a family a substantial amount of money. A student getting a seat in a government college will be paying a few thousand rupees per year, whereas paying for private seats could amount to a few lakhs each year. 

NEET provides a level playing field, at least in theory. Students belonging to small towns, villages, and large cities sit for the same exam. The availability of coaching classes and online resources has made NEET preparation much easier compared to the previous years, although the difference remains in the resources available to students. Yet the exam ensures that the deserving candidates from rural areas get an opportunity to compete for seats in top colleges.

In addition to qualifying for admission, passing NEET makes certain traits necessary for studying MBBS and beyond. NEET requires consistent hard work, time management, and resilience under pressure. Medical college itself involves intensive work, studying tough subjects for many hours, and clinical work. Those candidates who have been able to learn how to study systematically and cope with NEET, will most probably be more efficient in a medical college. It also teaches one to accept failure and strive towards success, because there are many candidates who pass the exam only at their second or third attempt.

Critics claim that NEET places undue stress on adolescents and that a single test cannot determine if a person is suitable for becoming a physician. It is true. Empathy, communication skills, and integrity are crucial factors in the medical practice which cannot be tested properly with an entrance exam. However, there is no other way yet to implement a system which would provide this holistic testing. Until an appropriate mechanism is developed and approved, NEET remains the most suitable way to make sure of students’ competency.

The preparation for postgraduate level courses will be set up by the NEET UG test too in the future for the students who want to pursue postgraduation. The same level of competition persists in NEET PG too. Students who realize the significance of dedicated preparations in the earlier stages usually continue with the same level of dedication and discipline.

In other words, NEET is significant for MBBS in the sense that it is the only officially recognized door for studying medicine in India. It is a fair process in terms of ranking and selection, it preserves the professional quality through the process of selecting academic-ready candidates, and it provides an achievable option for any deserving candidate irrespective of his or her social background. Even though there are certain drawbacks and a lot of pressure on students, the test still continues to function as a necessary starting point for those students who wish to take the white coat of doctors.
