CAT 2026 Exam Pattern & Expected Changes

The Common Admission Test (CAT) continues to be the most prestigious and highly competitive entrance examination for aspiring MBAs in India. • Quantitative Aptitude (QA)
• Number of questions: 22
• Duration: 40 minutes

Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Number System, and Modern Math.

• Total number of questions: 66
• Total duration: 120 minutes (2 hours)

Marking scheme: +3 for each right answer; -1 for each wrong answer (for MCQs). Non-MCQ (TITA) questions carry no negative marking.

The exam is conducted in three slots on the same day, and the difficulty level varies slightly across slots.

Expected Changes in CAT 2026

Although the IIMs have continued with a steady pattern since 2020, a couple of changes are expected in CAT 2026 as per the experts and the coaching institutions:

• Increase in the Number of Questions: Some observers predict an increment in the number of questions to 68-70, providing breathing room for DILR and QA sections.
• Focus on Quality in VARC: The RC passages may become longer or inference-oriented. Critical Reasoning questions may see a spike.
• Difficulty Level in DILR: The sets may get more calculation-heavy or include more complex hybrid puzzles involving different types of questions.
• Difficulty Level in QA: It has been moderate to difficult in recent years. More questions from applications of Arithmetic and Algebra can be expected.

• No Changes in Structure: Three sections along with sectional time limit is expected to continue. There has not been any willingness among IIMs to revert to old 3 hour pattern.

Section-wise Preparation Strategy for CAT 2026

VARC (The Game Changer)

Speed reading and comprehension are essential. Candidates must read across a wide variety of subjects – editorial (The Hindu, Indian Express), philosophy, psychology, and science paragraphs. One must attempt solving at least 4-5 RC’s daily. Improve one’s grammar and vocabulary through constant practice.

DILR (The Deciding Section)

This section is more about correctness than the number of questions attempted. Candidates must practice different types of sets from the classic bar graph type to complicated venn diagram puzzles and even tournament based ones. One needs to develop skills of fast interpretations here. 8-10 sets must be solved every day.

QA (The Foundation)

One should build up strong fundamentals first. Together arithmetic and algebra make almost 60-70 percent of the QA section. Concepts like Percentages, Ratios, Profit and Loss, Time and Work, Quadratic Equations are very important.

• Begin Early: Proper preparation must begin as early as 8-12 months before the exam. For candidates who have started preparation now (in mid-2026), a well-laid out 5-6 months schedule may work well too.
