The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2027 application process has officially begun today, Thursday, 27 August 2026. IIT Madras, the organising institute for GATE 2027, has activated the GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS) portal. Aspiring candidates can now register and submit their applications at the official website gate2027.iitm.ac.in.

GATE is a national-level examination that assesses comprehensive understanding of undergraduate subjects in Engineering, Technology, Science, Architecture, Commerce, Arts, and Humanities. A valid GATE score is widely used for admission to postgraduate programmes (M.Tech, M.E., Ph.D.) at IITs, NITs, IIITs, and other institutions, as well as for recruitment in several Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs). The GATE 2027 score will remain valid for three years from the date of result declaration.

Application Fee (per test paper)

  • Female / SC / ST / PwD candidates: ₹1,000 (regular period) | ₹1,500 (extended period)
  • All other candidates (including foreign nationals): ₹2,000 (regular period) | ₹2,500 (extended period)

Candidates opting for two papers must pay the fee for both papers.

Important New Requirements

Indian nationals must complete registration through a verified DigiLocker account. Facial verification / live photo capture is mandatory during the application process. Candidates are advised to use a computer with a webcam or a smartphone with at least a 5 MP camera. A new test paper — Robotics and Automation (RA) — has been introduced, and syllabi for several papers have been revised. Candidates should carefully check the updated Information Brochure and syllabi available on the official website.

How to Apply

  1. Visit gate2027.iitm.ac.in
  2. Ensure you have a verified DigiLocker account (mandatory for Indian nationals)
  3. Complete new registration to generate Enrollment ID and password
  4. Log in to GOAPS and fill personal, academic, and communication details
  5. Select paper(s) and preferred examination cities
  6. Upload photograph, signature, and required certificates in the prescribed format
  7. Complete live facial verification
  8. Pay the application fee online and submit the form
  9. Download and save the confirmation page for future reference
